My sculptural tribute to probably the most frightening visage ever to haunt the Silver Screen -
'The Phantom of the Opera' as portrayed by Lon Chaney Senior in the 1926 silent film based on the Gaston Leroux novel. The real physical pain he suffered to acheive his unique take on the look of this character (among his many others) is testimony to a true artist and the result is burned into the memories of horror genre fans old and new.
Lon Chaney immersed himself into the title role as the masked and disfigured Phantom who haunts the sewer system beneath the Paris Opera House. Obsessed with the singer, 'Christine' he sends threatening notes to the Opera House proprietors to have her sing the role of Marguerite the following night, threatening dire consequences if his demands are not met.
It is most famous for Lon Chaney's intentionally horrific, self-applied make-up, which was kept a studio secret until the film's premiere.
